Brief
The two-storey timber-framed home was to be extended to the side and rear whilst upgrading the cladding and roof to enhance thermal insulation. Additional features to be accommodated were solar heating, a glazed facade to act as a heating and cooling plenum, and triple-glazed door and window units.
Aim
To assess the existing structure for the proposed load regime and to design both modified and new support structure.
Solution
A new green roof with extended eaves in timber, strengthened timber columns and floor beams
as well as new ply-lined
sway-braced walls, piled foundations to accommodate the steep sloping site and poor ground conditions.
