Brief
To modify the family home to provide open-plan living arrangement between upper and lower ground floor levels by removing large segments of external and internal load-bearing walls.
Aim
To achieve an open-plan arrangement interconnecting two floor levels with large areas of glazing to the walls and roof for natural light whilst maintaining high thermal properties in order to minimise ongoing building energy costs.
Solution
Reinforced concrete foundations to a structural steel stability frame to form a large opening in the rear wall, steel beams to replace internal walls and to form the feature staircase and light-well.
